Pope Francis

Pope Francis issued an encyclical yesterday about the environment. He has been criticized for this. I am not qualified to discuss his scientific view. He has a master's degree in chemistry, whereas my expertise is in history, philosophy, and economics. So, while I shall refrain from commenting on the details of this encyclical, I state that history has shown that when a pope plays politics it usually turns out badly. The Middle Ages show that, most of the time, popes harm people when they get involved in politics. There have been a few rare incidences in which a pope did good by getting involved in politics. These few rare incidences do not negate the general historical rule which is that the Pope should stay out of politics. What do you think?
